Internet in Slovakia and updates

We’re in Slovakia at the moment which is not one of the Three mobile ‘feel at home’ countries, so we can’t use our normal SIM for a data connection. Our Croatian SIM finally ran out the other day and as we’re only going to be in Slovakia for a couple more days it’s not worth buying a local SIM.

This means our updates will be posted as and when we find wifi, and at the moment that is proving tricky. We can find loads of networks with our wifi booster aerial, but they are all locked down. We’ve got around it a couple of times by going out for a drink in a bar to get their code and at the moment we are using a really slow connection belonging to a shop in a ski resort close to where we are parked.

Bear with us, we’re still writing our updates and we’ll get them to you as soon as we can.

Cheers

I know the feeling of been locked out or even our d’ongle not willing to accept some network. I thought now that the roaming cost has been reduced by EU directive, it would have been easier! Cheers

Hi Paddy – the EU directive’s brought the cost down but they’re still extortionate compared with in-country deals you can get. Very roughly speaking you can get maybe 3GB for £10 or £15 or something like that with a local SIM. If you used a Three UK SIM (outside the Feel at Home countries) you’d pay 4.3p per MB under the latest EU cap. That doesn’t sound much, but 3GB = roughly 3000MB = £129, even with the current cap. Ouch… I’m not sure even if/when the EU blocks all roaming charges these kinds of deals will be available, so you’d still pay way over the odds with a UK SIM when in another EU country. We’ll see… Cheers, Jay
