The Best UK Internet Data SIMs For Roaming in Europe 2022

Please note: this post has been superseded by this one.

If you’re planning to travel to continental Europe in 2022, this is our take on the best roaming data internet SIM cards currently available in the UK as of May 2022. We’re using the Superdrug Mobile unlimited data SIM in our motorhome’s always-on internet system in the UK, but will probably switch to Tesco Mobile when we head to the EU.

There are no affiliate links in this article – this is just our take on the best roaming SIMs available at the moment folks.

Tesco Mobile

As of May 2022 Tesco Mobile are the only UK pay-as-you-go SIM provider who’ll let you use all of a 100GB a month data bundle outside the UK for £30 a month (in their Home from Home destinations). Their terms allow for two month’s use, after which they send a warning message. After a further two weeks they crank the cost up to about £3.60 per GB (terms here). If you’re up for signing a 24 month contract you can get an unlimited data SIM for £17.50 a month, but obviously that’s pretty expensive if you’ll be away for over two and a half months.

Superdrug

Superdrug Mobile offer a no-contract, unlimited data pay-as-you-go internet SIM card for £20 a month.

Until Feb 2022 Superdrug didn’t limit the amount of data which could be used aboard. They’ve now changed their terms so only 12GB a month can be used outside the UK.

iD Mobile

iD Mobile are another virtual operator, using the Three network like Superdrug. They offer a PAYG, monthly-contract unlimited data SIM for £20 a month. Their fair use policy states:

“We understand that sometimes you’ll want to roam for a few weeks at a time. That’s absolutely fine. But if you roam more than you use your phone at home (we mean in the UK) over a 4-month period, we might think you’re permanently roaming.” and “If you don’t change your usage behaviour to comply with it, we’ll also ask you to provide some sort of proof that you have strong ties to the UK, like a UK bill or bank statement.”

But they say nothing about capping data use, so it appears you can use unlimited data abroad for at least 62 days.

Vodafone

Vodafone offer some of the best roaming data contracts available, and all of that allowance can be used abroad in their ‘roam-free’ destinations, although only for 62 days in any 4 month period. Also, their cheaper unlimited deals are throttled to 2Mbps or 10Mbps and, as far as I can tell, all of their plans are now capped at 25GB a month abroad. Users report that Vodafone SIMs allow access to geo-locked services like iPlayer abroad too, which we found to be true when we used a Vodafone SIM in 2019.

VOXI

VOXI are Vodafone in disguise. They slice and dice the data options available differently to the mothership, offering a 45GB a month SIM with no contract for £20 a month, but only 20GB a month can be used in 47 European countries. Their unlimited plan is £35 a month and is also capped at 20GB a month abroad.

VOXI allow you to stream video (YouTube, Prime Video, Netflix, My5, TVPlayer and UKTV Play) and use social media (Snapchat, Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Facebook Messenger) without eating into your 45GB – BUT ONLY IN THE UK. You also need to read the small print on this, as streaming direct to a TV or Amazon Fire TV Stick or similar, or if you’re using a VPN, the data will come from your main allowance.

VOXI state they monitor SIM use abroad. If a SIM is used for 62 days in any 4 month period they send a warning message. After 14 days they say they can start charging £3.13 per GB. In other words, you’ve 76 days after leaving the UK before the SIM gets expensive. Sometimes you can work around these kinds of restriction by taking one or more spare SIMs and throwing away the ‘used up’ ones.

Three

We’ve long been fans of Three’s pre-loaded Internet with Legs SIM cards. You can pick these up from Amazon or Argos, and they offer a fixed amount of data lasting between 3 months (3GB, for about £13) and 2 years (24GB for about £45). As of 2021 Three now appear to cap these cards at a total lifetime amount of 12GB when used abroad. If that’s correct, there’s no point buying a 24GB one unless you also plan to use it in the UK.

We’ve found these cards to be flexible, but best used if you don’t get through much data. They have no contract, and only start counting down when you start using them, so you can have one sat in a cupboard as a back-up for your main SIM in case something goes wrong. Three don’t roam across all networks when abroad, so sometimes the signal isn’t great, but we’ve not had this problem much when we’ve used ’em.

If you buy a ‘normal’ Three SIM, be aware they all have a 12GB-a-month roaming cap.

Smarty

Smarty uses the Three network, and we first came across them when the UK locked down. As my dad doesn’t have broadband at home, he uses a MiFi device and we bought him an unlimited Smarty data SIM for £20 a month, so we can video call him, he can use YouTube and so on, without worrying about the data use. The SIM has worked really well for him. He takes it with them when he goes to his caravan on the coast, where it also works well. Smarty SIMs have no contract, so can be cancelled at any time.

Smarty SIMs are limited to 12GB a month abroad.

Other UK Roaming Data SIMs

O2 has a roaming data cap of 25GB per month, charging £3.50 a GB after that. EE will charge £2 a day for EU roaming from Jan 2022.

The Other Option – Getting a SIM Abroad

In the past we’ve bought PAYG SIMs in each country as we passed through. We had to, as UK roaming charges were silly money at the time. It wasn’t convenient but it was possible. The prepaid data SIM card wiki is the best source of info we know of for buying ‘local’ SIMs.

The prepaid data SIM card wiki website

The packages available vary widely both within and between countries, as do the processes for buying a SIM, activating it, checking remaining data allowance and topping up. Often you’ll have to do this in another language, we’ll never forget trying to activate a SIM in Polish, or the time all our month’s allowance was used up in 2 days in Sicily because we didn’t know we had to send a special text message from the SIM. Lots of fun!

Thanks! Jay

Regarding the Vodafone 100gb deal I opted for this a couple of months ago but I couldn’t be bothered with sending off claims so opted for the automatic single cheque cashback option from mobiles.co.uk. Their terms aren’t as good at the moment on this deal giving only £50 back but I think I got £90 back at the time. Although Vodafone have said they intend to continue with EU roaming I think going beyond a 12 month deal is optimistic. I use the SIM in the UK as home broadband so do get lots of use from it.
I spend 6 months continuous at a time in the EU and up to now have used Three without any problems although I have always stayed just below the 19gb per month threshold. I understand Vodafone do not enforce a limit on their length of usage abroad like Three so went with them for the big data allowance.

Just to update about Vodafone. I got the dreaded text late springtime from Vodafone enforcing their roaming terms and saying I would be charged after 14 days notice. I understand all their contracts from now will charge £2 a day to roam and cap to 25gb so party over for Vodafone and I haven’t used it since May. Have used 1pmobile just for calls and texts for last year abroad and not had any roaming restriction enforced. Surprisingly I very recently got a text from Three enforcing their roaming conditions and that is for my phone’s preloaded 24gb internet with legs SIM. I was aware Three were clamping down but didn’t realise there were even reigning in the internet with legs cards. Currently using up a Spanish prepay simyo card in France before returning to UK in a couple of weeks. Interestingly you can choose a 5gb weekend bonus for €2 and all 5gb is usable roaming in France unlike the normal data which is restricted to about a quarter.

We’ve been using a Smarty SIM with unlimited data as our broadband since moving house a month ago and it’s held up remarkably well, including working from home doing web development. If you use them for your mobile phones as well then you get 10% off them all which works out as a good deal. Will have to see what it’s like when we take the router away in our van but I’d hope it would be fine.

Hi Jason, Having used Vodafone on our last two trips ,with the 90 day restriction coming we’ve opted to go with O2 this time. O2’s 1 month business contract allows for 45Gb for £31.80. Unlike Vodafone there is no limit just the limit of the package purchased in our case 45Gb.
    Cheers Dave
PS we’ve just enjoyed 2 nights at Mortange sur Grionde – a site I read from your blog so thanks for that.

We have a Voda data only sim – it’s £30 per month for 50 gig. We never had any kind of warning or caps imposed and stayed abroad for almost a year. It was rock solid pretty much the whole time. It was expensive those couple of months when 50 gig wasn’t enough(!).

Used Vodafone 100gb, when fulltiming in UK and abroad worked well and good value with discounts over the 12 months.

But when it ran out we switched to Superdrug mobile, unlimited ,20pm, 30 day contract can be suspended or reduced if not using. So when not in van we suspend renewal or knock it down to 10pm.

On the way to the tunnel we renewed with unlimited.
Been abroad since September so far no restriction, have a chat transcript with Superdrug saying no restriction abroad but did not entirely trust them as 3 based, we were expecting 20gb limit. But used 60gb last month, 58gb was abroad, looking to exceed that this month 55gb so far in Spain, so fingers crossed it continues till we come back in November.

In my extensive research I went with O2 100gb PAYG Simcard for 30£. We get 4G access (it seems others are restricted to 3G data speeds) and the full 100GB – yet to be tested but have racked up 30GB this month so far. And unused data rolls over to the next month as well.

Interesting to learn of the superdrug sim, I wasn’t aware of it.

Regarding Smarty: I have a smarty sim in a security camera at my static caravan on the costa del sol. I set it up in March prior to returning to the UK as lockdown was imminent and needed to get my 74 yr old sister who was with us back to the relative safety of her home.

It was working flawlessly up until a June when I could no longer log-on to the camera. I am unable to determine why I cannot access it any longer.

I am unable to determine the reason, whether it might be a camera fault or power failure, network issue or smarty sim issue.

I contacted smarty to try to ascertain whether the sim was still active and could be “seen” (registered to the roaming network), but they weren’t helpful saying they had no facility to interrogate the sim to ascertain if it was still live on the network or not, which I find astonishing! Surely they must be able to determine whether the sim is active or not?

I am wondering if there is a time limit for roaming? three months maybe? Does anyone know?

I had a giffgaff sim which, I discovered *does* have a maximum roaming limit if 3 months because, they tell me, it is meant for “vacation use only”

Any advice on this issue or the most appropriate sim for a security camera would be welcome.

If the remote camera system has a wired network port there is a solution to remotely power cycle everything if it stops working. Not cheap at around £100, but I’ve been using the “ezoutlet2” (web search that term) for several years and it has been super reliable. You can both remotely reset it over the web, but it also pings the web periodically and if it sees no connection it also power cycles itself. If you plug the router/MiFi and camera (and any hub etc) into the power socket it sorts itself out when things go wrong. Not cheap, and “similar” cheaper items do appear to be available, but I was recommended the ezoutlet2 by a friend who works in IT and have not been disappointed with it. Hope this helps.

I took out a new contract 3 weeks ago because of trhe 25GB roaming allowance and called to complain and cancel as the terms had changed. Spent 30 mins waiting on webchat and then 30 mins chatting to be told I can’t help and will have to tranbsfer you. Spent another 20 mins chatting to be told I can’t help you and you’ll have to call xx number. I asked to a supervisor to call me back and that was agreed but unsurprisingly that didn’t happen. Today I called the number given, explained and was transferred. Talked for 20 miuns and told I can’t help and will have to transfer you. Waited 20 mins and then spoke for 30 mins to be told I can’t help and you have to pay your entire 2 year outstanding contract to leave – even though the terms have changed and that is the only reason I want to leave. Was told to contact complaints (THE SIXTH PERSON IN THIS SAGA – excluding the failed callback). It is so stressful to have so little control. I have been with THREE for 5 years and only changed because of the extra roaming data allowance. Don’t use Vodafone as they have caused me 100 times the stress in 3 weeks that my previous supplier caused in years.

We have AYCE Three UK contracts but are limited to 20Gb data per billing period whilst roaming so the Superdrug Unlimited Plan £20 looks excellent!

Did you have any problems ( Data cap or exceeding days roaming ) with the Superdrug £20 plan after 31 December 2020?

Am I right in thinking I can order the SIM now and then activate just before travelling to Europe?

        Hi Jason, Great article.

I am also just researching sim cards to use in France. Both my wife and I have 3 mobile phone contracts but we are in contract until October.

However I have a small Huawei MiFi box that I also use with 3. As explained earlier (David&Gillian) 3 are now only allowing 20gb usage abroad. Do you think this sim card work in the Mifi?(it is unlocked and now out of contract) .

My alternative would be to put the sim card into a spare mobile phone. Did you use your phone as a hotspot at anytime in particular abroad. I would like to be able to use it for just my wife and I to use. If so does it slow your internet speed considerably? How was the speed when you tethered? Again thanks for a great article and thanks in anticipation for any answers you could give to my questions.

        Kind Regards, Lou

          Hi Lou

We have 1p Mobile SIM cards in our phones, which are PAYG and low-cost for us but only if we don’t access the internet directly through our phones, which costs £10 per GB, so we usually have mobile data turned off. Instead we share the personal WiFi connection from a Huawei MiFi like you’ve mentioned above. We popped our Superdrug Mobile unlimited SIM into it and that gave us unlimited GB per month & it still worked after 62 days abroad with no throttling/warnings etc.

Download and upload 4G bandwidths were very roughly 10Mbps in our parking spot in Nerja (about a mile from the edge of town), but we saw faster speeds in other places on our way south/north, it depends on whether you’re using a roof-mounted antenna, how far you are from the nearest mast used by your operator and so on. We were able to stream UK TV with no APN, with the occasional buffering at busier times of the evening. If we needed the internet while out and about we just took the MiFi with us, and we still had the option to turning on roaming mobile internet on out 1p Mobile SIMs if we really needed the internet when away from the van.

          Cheers, enjoy La France! Jay

    Hi All,
Just a note that Smarty is revising its Ts & Cs as of June 1, 2021. First: “As of 1st June, our fair usage policy is being updated, meaning you won’t be able to use more than 12GB of data with your base tariff each month while roaming in the EU. If you would like to use more than 12GB of data while in the EU, you can purchase an out-of-plan add-on”; this is a reduction from the previous 20GB/month noted above. Second: “If you spend 60 consecutive days abroad, we have the right to suspend all services on your account.” Whether they will do what they “have the right to” do remains to be seen.
I think I’ll be looking seriously at switching to Superdrug.
    Cheers,

This is an apptly timed update on Data SIM cards given that both EE and Vodafone have both announced the reintroduction of roaming charges. Over the next few months I can see this being an ever changing field. Let’s hope someone has the bottle to refrain from introducing roaming charges, they will make a killing from the influx of holiday makers next year. As an aside at present we use ID mobile.

The sim would work in my phone BUT it would not allow for tethering, so pretty useless.

However, I have a Spain trip coming up and wanted to take the device with me. I’ve signed up and got the unlimited Superdrug deal which works in the device no problem. As I type, I have 3 devices connected to it – Desktop, Laptop and phone. All running pretty fast. We’ll see how is shapes in up Spain but think it will be fine.

The beauty of the Sim decal with SD is there’s no tie in. I can use when needed on a monthly bases or just as a backup for office/home (have unlimited at home/office as most do these days) since my mobile deal is very good that is not unlimited data and capped when abroad, like most.

All said, for a years unlimited for £240 through the business it’s hardly anything to lose sleep over and once we start our travels, I will (should) use it a lot.

One question, do SD never questions why you don’t make any calls or send text and use only the data?

You’ll need to log into the Huawei management interface (something like http://192.168.8.1, check the manual) and turn data roaming on, and set the Superdrug APN to superdrug.net (blank username and password). That should mean as soon as you arrive abroad the SIM registers with a local network and starts working.

I had a little online chat today and was told that a short holiday was acceptable 2-4 weeks but their terms don’t state it their technical team may decide to disable the sim?

Seems they are operating on opinion rather than fact which is frustrating. Luckily another sim is landing tomorrow so I should be back in business but I wouldn’t be banking on 90 days at a time now.

Just purchased a Superdrug SIM and checked with the chat that it would be ok to use in my Huawei mifi abroad and was told NO only in the UK! Worrying.

    Quick Update –
Having dug out of the cupboard and tried the Huawei e57722 which was ok, I decided to get the more powerful E5785 model with longer battery life, faster speeds & the two external antenna ports.

Has anyone any experience with antennas like this and have any recommendations:

    Tips appreciated :-)

Hi Kevin – I’m not sure how much of a speed increase you’d see with antennas directly attached to the Huawei. The problem in a motorhome is the metallic shell of the van creating a Faraday Effect, shielding the interior of the van from electromagnetic waves – so no 4G! That’s why folks like motorhomewifi.com sell roof-mounted antennas (or you could get a Poynting Puck and install it yourself). Best of luck, Jay

        Hi Jay –
        Thanks for your reply.

I’ve looked at the roof mounted antennas and will probably go the Puck route once we have the van, but was looking to use antennas direct for other situations and uses to boost the signal.

    Hi,
just wondered if anyone has tried using the Superdrug sim recently in Spain? We purchased the £20 unlimited data option when coming over a couple of weeks ago and are currently in the mountains up behind Nerja in Competa, but are experiencing problems with internet dropping out and are completely unable to stream anything. We think the signal is ok as we are showing 2/3 bars and 4G+.
It would be great to know if you got good streaming in all locations or whether Nerja was a hot spot?
    Any help gratefully/suggestions/experiences appreciated.

Hi Cat – we’re heading down to Nerja with the Superdrug SIM tomorrow so can try it out for ourselves! We never tried our SIM at Competa but might get the chance this time. One tip: if your device allows it, trying forcing it onto a 3G network (untick ‘use LTE’ or similar). We’ve found the 3G network faster than the 4G one at the same location in the past, worth a try at least. Cheers, Jay

Thanks Jay. Best of luck with the trip. Would love to hear how you get on with the Superdrug sim.
We did a walk in the hills today and could see Frijilliana and Nerja and I was reminded of some of the hikes you blogged about earlier in the year.
    Stunning scenery.

Best of luck on the drive down… would love to hear how the Superdrug Sim works and how you’re getting on in Nerja in general. The weather’s great for walking in the hills right now!
We tried changing to 3G which is an interesting tip. We will try it some more and report back.

      Hi Cat

We flew down this time (we’re only here a few days). The superdrug SIM is working well for us but we’re right in the middle of town and aren’t using it to stream TV. Hope you’re getting decent performance from yours – if not Digi Mobil are doing unlimited prepaid data for €25 a month: https://prepaid-data-sim-card.fandom.com/wiki/Spain.

Yep, the weather is cracking! We went up El Cielo today, beautiful up there. Cheers, Jay

We’ve just been informed that Superdrug are introducing a fair use policy for data used within the EU and EEA from 23/2/22. If you’re on a plan with 15GB of data or more, you will be subject to a 12GB roaming data cap.
    Hope this helps….

Just had the same notice from Superdrug. Currently in the Canaries and enjoying maxing the data while
      We can!

Nice while it lasted. Will be cancelling the sim on return.

Reading the article again, looks like ID Mobile is worth a run. Hopefully they will keep with the unlimited data but I won’t hold my breath! Anyone here on that deal?

What it does show though, is it’s worth having 30day contracts rather than tying yourself into 12 or 24 month deals and then getting the rug pulled from under you.

Currently in Spain since Friday and used 36gb of the SD sim already in just 3days. As consumers (certainly speaking for myself who’s work while out here) we consume much more data than we may realise.

idmobile now have a fair use of 15gb on a £20 a month sim

Our open data policy is designed to protect the great value we offer you. It works by adding a small surcharge of .25p per MB (£2.56 per GB) when you use data above your fair use amount while roaming in one of our band 1 inclusive roaming destinations.

Hi, just found this article, Superdrug and others have withdrawn inclusive EU roaming and are charging. Any thoughts on which the best provider would be? ASDA do a sim which gives you 25Gb data in Europe for about £15 per month. Brian
