Website Hosting
It’s been fun getting the site up and running! About 10 years ago I spent months learning HTML, XML, XSLT, JavaScript, SQL and ASP. It would have taken me months to code this site from scratch, while using WordPress, it took about 2 hours to get it up and running, and adding new content is just a case of opening a browser and typing it in. Simply awesome.
So, this site’s running on a hosted server in the US, provided by Hostgator (disclosure: this is a referral link I get paid if you also use Hostgator after using this link). I installed WordPress onto the site using their Fantastico installer. All looking good! I had started running the site using Drupal 7, but I found it a bit too powerful (read: I couldn’t be bothered reading the manual). I also hit a database collation problem, which indicated Drupal 7 modules were nascent and conflicting with one another. WordPress is far easier, and faster, in my humble opinion.
Before Hostgator, I’d started using a 1and1 hosting service but I was really disappointed with them as you couldn’t install any new plugins/modules on their service, making it almost useless. So far so good with Hostgator though. I’ll update this post over time with thoughts on how well the service works.
