Pooch Chariot

dog bicycle trailerWe had thought about towing our Smart car behind us when we go, but have decided to take bicycles instead. This option will not only help with fuel economy but will hopefully get us a bit fitter too.

So what to do with Charlie the pooch? He has a tendency to play chicken with oncoming bike wheels when we’re out walking, and likes to stop suddenly to sniff stuff, so him running along side didn’t look like a good idea. He’s a tad too heavy for a basket either up front or behind (even after his recent diet), so we decided to get him a dog bicycle trailer, which we’ve named his pooch chariot.

Last weekend after frantic bidding on eBay we won a child bike trailer for the princely sum of £40. We got home and J took it out for a spin.

Not the most successful test run. But after some adjustment, bribery with treats and using his collar to secure him, pooch now seems quite happy in his chariot. We just need to get both bikes roadworthy and then we can head off on a few outings this summer.

Hi. Love this site by the way. We’re planning on a similar trip in spring. We have two minature dachshunds and we’re wondering whether to get them a bike trailer or baskets to fit on the handle bars. How did the trailer pan out for you guys in the end. Was it easy enough to pack in the motorhome? Once you’d cycled into town for example, was it then a nuisance? Thanks in advance. And thanks for all the other useful info on this site.

      Hi Rowan
Charlie never got used to his chariot, perhaps we should have bought him a proper dog one as it would have a more solid floor.
Because of that it hardly got used and was last seen in Morocco being used to move stuff around on a campsite in the desert.
The guys at ourbumble.com might be better placed to answer your questions as they are on the road with their two dachshunds.
