Harvey Sold on eBay
We’re currently in between vans. We’ve only owned one van, an Autosleeper Talbot Express Harmony, but we sold ‘him’ on eBay in May 2011 (he was called Harvey, the RV). We took a short video of the van and used it to help sell the van. The guy who bought it said the video swung it, so I can recommend doing the same if you’re selling your van!
The video’s here; apologies for my droning voice and scowling face, I need to work on my media style…
Harvey was a solid van. We took him to France, Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg (OK, we only drove through Luxembourg!). We owned him for 6 years and had 4 trips to Europe. The reason we decided not to use him for our European wanderings is the bed. It was awkward and fiddly to set the bed up every night and was driving us nuts, even on our 2 week trips. The idea of doing it for months on end was a non-starter. Instead we’re looking at getting a Hymer 544, which has a drop down bed built into then cab, Which can stay made up all the time and we can jump straight in each night with minimal fuss, perfect!
Ju here – sad as it was to see Harvey go, being paid in cash helped us get over it.

Couldn’t help but be a tad nosey at your site….very impressive.
Don’t get a Hymer – they are so ugly!! I did a European road trip down to Serbia admittadly in a Focus at the time, but I chatted to numerous British motorhome travellers who were away for months and months. A lot of people do tend to source left hand drive RVs. It is so much more practical and apparentley prices are a touch cheaper. Just a thought anyway, you will be a better judge than me, a useful website to try is –

Cheers Roger.
Sorry to say but I think we’re settled on a Hymer – I can’t stand the motorhomes with the big bubble of an overcab bed on the front, but equally want a fixed fixed that doesn’t take up too much room. No motorhomes are that pretty – apart from the shiny silver ones that we can’t afford!
Thanks for the link, I’ll have a nosey at that (and you’re welcome to nosey through our blog any time).

You did the right thing buying a Hymer …we have had ours for 16 years and love her …she was 3 years old when we bought her in Scotland after our first one had been stolen from outside our homein Lancashire ..we think it was put on a low loader in the night becauseat that time itshe needed mending as she wouldnt start ..We used our Hymer for towing our boat GP 14 sailing dingy to events all over the the UK and Ireland ..every week end and all holidays in the sailing season ..in winter we have taken her to Portugal via Spain..calling at all Yacht Clubs on route ..free parking.. Bar and resturants..We just told the powers in charge we were a tender to a boat and were waiting for her to make a land fall at that point ..and off we went to the next one with the same story …worked like a dream..In fact we did go check on a friends boat in La Coruna …and camped on the harbour …not a good nights rest as it was home to the local hookers doing there business from cars ..you do see some sights in a campervan ..we were heading for Christmas day mass at Santiago Compastelo to see the parading of st James’ bones and the swinging of the incence bong by the monks ..arrived in one piece to a fabulous sight …then hot chocolate at the Parador …and off to Portugal …one of our trips at Christmas was the year of the hard frost ..and off we went to Scotland ..well why not ..there wouldnt be any tourists ..the temp fell to -23c on the banks of Loch Ness ..brrrr but the Hymer heating worked well ..we ended up at Apple cross for New Year ..I had never seen snow sparkle but it does …so cold …nothing on the road only stags eating at the road side as they were running out of food on the upper slopes …Glen Coe on that trip was at its most magnificent ..after 10 days the weather turn and snow was forcast so off we went back to the south and home to Barrowford in lanc…
Wow, it sounds like your Hymer has had more adventures than Dave. We’ve only managed -4c, and then it was heating on and all the bedding on the bed – Charlie was tucked into his sleeping bag!
We try to follow the sun, so keeping cool is our main problem. But you’re right Hymers are fab. We love Dave, even when he plays up!
Julie :)
Hi. I currently work as a crane driver and find it very stressful. For a while now I have looked at buying a camper and heading to Europe, especially France. Im in a position to buy the van and have some money behind me now. Would you say its possible to pick some work up along the way to live on or would you say it was too risky. Thanks for any information. great website,
Martyn
Hi Martyn! We’re not the best to talk travel jobs as we did little work on the road. The work is there I think, at least in the EU countries, but you’ll have to hunt it out locally. One option is to look for websites which offer free board and lodgings in return for work. Places like farms and guest houses usually. Stress is a dark hole my friend, I know, but time on the road cured me. Only one warning: once you’ve been out on the road and free, you won’t be wanting to go back. Cheers, Jay
Hi. Just found your blog . We just bought a motorhome with a view to doing the uk next year and Europe in 2016 so brace yourself for questions.
First one is how did you access internet?
Other questions will undoubtably follow!
Paul
Hi Paul, adventure time for you guys, go go go! We put together some pages to try to answer some common questions, worth a look, Internet access is about half way down:
