Our 2012 Eleven Month Motorhome Tour – Tunisia and Eastern Europe
Tour Summary
After our first 11 month tour of Europe and Morocco, we were only back in the UK for a couple of weeks before we set off again on the second part of our trip. We caught the ferry to France and headed east to Belgium, through the Netherlands and Germany before a night in Liechtenstein. We then drove a few Swiss mountain passes before reaching Italy.
We worked our way south, visiting the Cinque Terre, before following the west side of the country taking in Pisa, Florence, Tuscany, Rome and Pompeii before heading to the ‘toe’ to catch the ferry over to Sicily. We spent Christmas and New Year in Sicily before catching a ferry over to Tunisia at the start of 2013. We visited the grave of Ju’s Grandfather who was killed in Tunisia in World War II before heading south to the Sahara desert and the sets from Star Wars. Back in Sicily Mount Etna erupted behind a veil of cloud, so we drove up its side through the ash and slept on it.
Back on the Italian mainland we followed the bottom of the boot to Bari where we camped on board the ferry to Greece. We drove the coast roads of the Peloponnese stopping in deserted beaches and visiting historic sites like Olympia and Sparti. A few days in Athens and the monasteries of Meteora took us north up into Bulgaria for more monasteries, mountains and lakes. Romania followed with Dracula castles, the Transfargrasan pass and Red Bull Romaniacs. A few days in Ukraine tested Dave’s suspension, before we reached Poland and the Salt mines of Krakow.
We drove across Germany, stopping in Berlin for a few days, before heading to the French Alps. A cable car up the Aiguille du Midi in Chamonix was followed by a loop around Mont Blanc which took us into Switzerland and Italy. Back in France, we crossed the middle of the country to Dune du Pilat on the Atlantic Coast, which we then followed back to the ferry.
