We met a couple on our first night in Austria who told us that as long as we were legally parked and were travelling we could stop anywhere (apart from in Vienna, National Parks and the Tirol region), so we made sure we wild camped as much as possible. A couple of times we paid to go and look around some of the magnificent castles perched high up on rocks and then slept in the car park (we asked first and they were more than happy for us to). Also with the money we saved we ate out a little bit more than usual.<\/div>\n

The vignette only cost \u20ac8 for 10 days and was certainly worth it for the clean, smooth motorways with brilliant facilities. There are parking areas every few kilometres, all with bins and picnic benches and many with loos. As Dave is under 3.5t he is classed as a car, vehicles over 3.5t you need to a ‘pay as you go’ type box fitted.<\/div>\n

The above costs also include two nights that we stopped at a camping cheque campsite in the south of Austria just before we met up with friends at Lake Bled in Slovenia (well it doesn’t do to turn up with bags of laundry!). As the campsite was easily accessible using only minor roads we didn’t have a vignette for this stay.<\/div>\n
