If you’re planning to travel to continental Europe in 2022, this is our take on the best roaming data internet SIM cards currently available in the UK as of May 2022. We’re using the Superdrug Mobile unlimited data SIM in our motorhome’s always-on internet system<\/a> in the UK, but will probably switch to Tesco Mobile when we head to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are no affiliate links in this article – this is just our take on the best roaming SIMs available at the moment folks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tesco Mobile<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As of May 2022 Tesco Mobile<\/a> are the only UK pay-as-you-go SIM provider who’ll let you use all of a 100GB a month data bundle outside the UK for \u00a330 a month (in their Home from Home<\/a> destinations). Their terms allow for two month’s use, after which they send a warning message. After a further two weeks they crank the cost up to about \u00a33.60 per GB (terms here<\/a>). If you’re up for signing a 24 month contract you can get an unlimited data SIM for \u00a317.50 a month<\/a>, but obviously that’s pretty expensive if you’ll be away for over two and a half months.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Superdrug<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Superdrug Mobile offer a no-contract, unlimited data pay-as-you-go internet SIM card for \u00a320 a month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until Feb 2022 Superdrug didn’t limit the amount of data which could be used aboard. They’ve now changed their terms so only 12GB a month can be used outside the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

iD Mobile<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

iD Mobile are another virtual operator, using the Three network like Superdrug. They offer a PAYG, monthly-contract unlimited data SIM<\/a> for \u00a320 a month. Their fair use policy<\/a> states:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We understand that sometimes you’ll want to roam for a few weeks at a time. That’s absolutely fine. But if you roam more than you use your phone at home (we mean in the UK) over a 4-month period, we might think you\u2019re permanently roaming.” <\/em>and “If you don’t change your usage behaviour to comply with it, we’ll also ask you to provide some sort of proof that you have strong ties to the UK, like a UK bill or bank statement.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But they say nothing about capping data use, so it appears you can use unlimited data abroad for at least 62 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vodafone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Vodafone offer some of the best roaming data contracts available, and all of that allowance can be used abroad in their ‘roam-free’ destinations, although only for 62 days in any 4 month period<\/a>. Also, their cheaper unlimited deals are throttled to 2Mbps or 10Mbps and, as far as I can tell, all of their plans are now capped at 25GB a month abroad. Users report that Vodafone SIMs allow access to geo-locked services like iPlayer abroad too, which we found to be true when we used a Vodafone SIM in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

VOXI<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

VOXI are Vodafone in disguise. They slice and dice the data options available differently to the mothership, offering a 45GB a month SIM with no contract for \u00a320 a month, but only 20GB a month can be used in 47 European countries. Their unlimited plan is \u00a335 a month and is also capped at 20GB a month abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

VOXI allow you to stream video (YouTube, Prime Video, Netflix, My5, TVPlayer and UKTV Play) and use social media (Snapchat, Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Facebook Messenger) without<\/em> eating into your 45GB – BUT ONLY IN THE UK. You also need to read the small print on this<\/a>, as streaming direct to a TV or Amazon Fire TV Stick or similar, or if you’re using a VPN, the data will come from your main allowance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

VOXI state they monitor SIM use abroad. If a SIM is used for 62 days in any 4 month period they send a warning message. After 14 days they say they can start charging \u00a33.13 per GB. In other words, you’ve 76 days after leaving the UK before the SIM gets expensive. Sometimes you can work around these kinds of restriction by taking one or more spare SIMs and throwing away the ‘used up’ ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

We’ve long been fans of Three’s pre-loaded Internet with Legs SIM cards. You can pick these up from Amazon or Argos, and they offer a fixed amount of data lasting between 3 months (3GB, for about \u00a313) and 2 years (24GB for about \u00a345). As of 2021 Three now appear to cap these cards at a total lifetime amount of 12GB when used abroad. If that’s correct, there’s no point buying a 24GB one unless you also plan to use it in the UK. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We’ve found these cards to be flexible, but best used if you don’t get through much data. They have no contract, and only start counting down when you start using them, so you can have one sat in a cupboard as a back-up for your main SIM in case something goes wrong. Three don’t roam across all networks when abroad, so sometimes the signal isn’t great, but we’ve not had this problem much when we’ve used ’em. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you buy a ‘normal’ Three SIM, be aware they all have a 12GB-a-month roaming cap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smarty<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Smarty uses the Three network, and we first came across them when the UK locked down. As my dad doesn’t have broadband at home, he uses a MiFi device and we bought him an unlimited Smarty data SIM for \u00a320 a month, so we can video call him, he can use YouTube and so on, without worrying about the data use. The SIM has worked really well for him. He takes it with them when he goes to his caravan on the coast, where it also works well. Smarty SIMs have no contract, so can be cancelled at any time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smarty SIMs are limited to 12GB a month abroad. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other UK Roaming Data SIMs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

O2 has a roaming data cap of 25GB per month, charging \u00a33.50 a GB after that. EE will charge \u00a32 a day for EU roaming from Jan 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Other Option – Getting a SIM Abroad<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the past we’ve bought PAYG SIMs in each country as we passed through. We had to, as UK roaming charges were silly money at the time. It wasn’t convenient but it was possible. The prepaid data SIM card wiki<\/a> is the best source of info we know of for buying ‘local’ SIMs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The packages available vary widely both within and between countries, as do the processes for buying a SIM, activating it, checking remaining data allowance and topping up. Often you’ll have to do this in another language, we’ll never forget trying to activate a SIM in Polish, or the time all our month’s allowance was used up in 2 days in Sicily because we didn’t know we had to send a special text message from the SIM. Lots of fun!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
