{"id":37067,"date":"2020-01-14T15:48:20","date_gmt":"2020-01-14T15:48:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ourtour.co.uk\/home\/?p=37067"},"modified":"2020-01-15T08:21:26","modified_gmt":"2020-01-15T08:21:26","slug":"our-2020-motorhome-roaming-internet-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ourtour.co.uk\/home\/our-2020-motorhome-roaming-internet-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Our 2020 Motorhome Roaming Internet System"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This post describes how we&#8217;re accessing the internet for roaming abroad in our motorhome in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/ourtourmedia.s3.eu-central-003.backblazeb2.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_20200114_141549256_HDR.jpg\" alt=\"The key components of our current motorhome internet roaming system\" class=\"wp-image-37072\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ourtourmedia.s3.eu-central-003.backblazeb2.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_20200114_141549256_HDR.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ourtourmedia.s3.eu-central-003.backblazeb2.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_20200114_141549256_HDR-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ourtourmedia.s3.eu-central-003.backblazeb2.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_20200114_141549256_HDR-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ourtourmedia.s3.eu-central-003.backblazeb2.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_20200114_141549256_HDR-705x397.jpg 705w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>The key components of our current motorhome internet roaming system<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our Internet and Phone Needs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is how we use the internet, make phone calls and send text messages from our motorhome:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>We sometimes travel outside the UK for several months at a time, which is often longer than UK mobile providers &#8216;acceptable use policies&#8217; allow.<\/li><li>Almost all of our travels are within the EU.<\/li><li>We <a href=\"https:\/\/ourtour.co.uk\/home\/why-dont-we-full-time-in-our-motorhome\/\">don&#8217;t travel full-time<\/a>, and prefer not to be held in any contract longer than 30 days.<\/li><li>I&#8217;d describe us as &#8216;medium use&#8217; for internet access: while we have the <a href=\"https:\/\/ourtour.co.uk\/home\/the-amazon-fire-tv-stick-tv-anywhere-in-your-motorhome\/\">system to watch streaming TV abroad<\/a> we generally don&#8217;t (this uses around 0.5GB to 1GB an hour).<\/li><li>We make and receive very few mobile phone calls and text messages while abroad, but do want to keep our UK number so we can be contacted as needed.<\/li><li>We&#8217;re lazy when it comes to searching for WiFi, and just want to park up the van and have internet access working immediately.<\/li><li>4G speeds are easily fast enough for us and we&#8217;re rarely in high-density environments (like football stadiums) where 5G would be useful.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Motorhome Internet System We Use<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the equipment we&#8217;re using in 2020:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>We have two smartphones which each have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.1pmobile.com\">1pmobile.com PAYG SIM cards<\/a> in them. We&#8217;ve found this provider doesn&#8217;t seem to block the SIMs if we&#8217;re out the UK for a few months at a time. <\/li><li>We don&#8217;t have mobile data turned on for our smartphones, but instead connect them to a MiFi-type device which creates a private WiFi network inside our van (see next point), and can take it with us if we want internet when away from our van.<\/li><li>We use an unlocked Huawei E5577 4G personal wireless hotspot (MiFi) to connect to the internet (these are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/gp\/search\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_sr_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=front-page-buy-a-beer-21&amp;keywords=E5577C&amp;index=aps&amp;camp=1634&amp;creative=6738&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;linkId=cd9d5eba1d3dc1a4fdbedcd78d3ca835\">available from Amazon for about \u00a365<\/a>).<\/li><li>The MiFi has a SIM card in it which connects to a mobile network and shares it out to both our phones, our laptops, Kindle and so on.<\/li><li>We also have the MiFi wired into our van&#8217;s 12V system so it is always fully charged, and connected to a roof-mounted omni-directional low-profile 4G antenna, which boosts the signal in remote areas. This equipment is available from <a href=\"http:\/\/motorhomewifi.com\">motorhomewifi.com<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/ourtourmedia.s3.eu-central-003.backblazeb2.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC03348-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18027\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ourtourmedia.s3.eu-central-003.backblazeb2.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC03348-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ourtourmedia.s3.eu-central-003.backblazeb2.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC03348-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ourtourmedia.s3.eu-central-003.backblazeb2.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC03348-174x131.jpg 174w, https:\/\/ourtourmedia.s3.eu-central-003.backblazeb2.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC03348-70x53.jpg 70w, https:\/\/ourtourmedia.s3.eu-central-003.backblazeb2.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC03348.jpg 1469w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>The motorhomewifi.com 4G MIMO Roof-Mounted Antenna<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The SIM Card(s) We&#8217;re Using in 2020<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We use a combination of SIM cards, mainly to ensure we have a connection if something goes wrong with one of them (it gets blocked by an operator, we run out of data and can&#8217;t recharge it, there is no network available on one of them and so on):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Three&#8217;s Internet with Legs<\/strong>. These are pre-pay SIM cards which provide a set amount of data lasting for 12 or 24 months (you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/gp\/search\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_sr_il_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=front-page-buy-a-beer-21&#038;keywords=three sim&#038;index=aps&#038;camp=1634&#038;creative=6738&#038;linkCode=xm2&#038;linkId=5103164927a1db0403327b8632b8a1e6\">simply buy them from Amazon<\/a>, no need for an account with Three, a contract etc). The clock only starts when you start using them, so you can store a few and use them as you like. We have two of these, and use them mainly as fall-backs in case the options below don&#8217;t work for some reason.<\/li><li>This year we&#8217;ve opted to buy <strong>a local SIM in Spain<\/strong> as our main internet SIM card. We were recommended the SIMYO operator (who use the Orange network &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/prepaid-data-sim-card.fandom.com\/wiki\/Spain\">there&#8217;s a really good site with lots more details here<\/a>) and we&#8217;ve bought a 32GB SIM for \u20ac17. That&#8217;s very roughly half the price per GB of using a UK SIM. Unused data rolls over for three months, so this SIM plus part of one of the Three SIMs could last our entire trip (it&#8217;ll roam into Portugal and France like a UK one would), although I suspect we&#8217;ll buy another top-up so we&#8217;ve plenty of data. To get the SIMYO SIM we went to a shop in Santander, showed our passport and paid \u20ac10 to them for the SIM (we used the shop address as our &#8216;Spanish address&#8217;), then, we needed to load another \u20ac7 onto the SIM. After much faffing about we discovered SIMYO don&#8217;t accept UK credit cards online, so we bought a further \u20ac10 top-up from a Repsol garage, leaving us with \u20ac3 credit. <\/li><li>Last year we used a <strong>Vodafone PAYG SIM<\/strong> and roamed with it. This is much easier than buying a local SIM: it just worked as we moved from country to country. The Vodafone SIM also issued a UK IP address so we could watch iPlayer without paying for a VPN. However, Vodafone now seem to cap some of their SIMs at 25GB per month when abroad (weirdly their terms indicate this only applies to &#8216;unlimited&#8217; packages). Their 30-day SIMs are very good, but still more expensive than using SIMYO, and unused data doesn&#8217;t roll over to subsequent months.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s it, any questions or
