For us 2018 wasn&#8217;t a massive year of motorhome travels. As you can see from the chart on the right, we were at home for about seven and a half months of the year. We spent a couple of weeks in holiday cottages, a few nights at festivals and only around three and a half months abroad in Zagan, our motorhome.<\/p>\n<p>If you are looking for an idea of how much it costs to tour in a motorhome, I&#8217;d better point you elsewhere. The key message from the book is that you shouldn&#8217;t guess at stuff &#8211; base your view of the world on facts, and it has some amazing statistics in it to make you feel much better about things. So, why is this relevant to our finances? Because all of our financial information is based on fact. We don&#8217;t &#8216;think&#8217; we spend around \u00a3200 a month of food in the supermarket, we know that we spend on average \u00a3251.53 (\u00a33018.32 a year). How do we know this? Because <a href=\"https:\/\/ourtour.co.uk\/home\/seeking-the-cash-leaks-how-we-track-our-spending\/\">we track everything we spend<\/a>, and everything we have coming in &#8211; we treat our lives a bit like a business and our tracking is our profit and loss and balance sheet accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Tracking our income and spending is now an ingrained habit, one that I have been doing for over a decade. Tracking helped us to pay off our mortgage early, tour Europe for two years on a pot of savings, gain financial freedom and it now gives us peace of mind that our crazy experimental life works.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n<style type=\"text\/css\" data-created_by=\"avia_inline_auto\" id=\"style-css-av-jqv0uih5-b35a1df4d2956a35cdbe606c66f21b3a\">\n#top .av-special-heading.av-jqv0uih5-b35a1df4d2956a35cdbe606c66f21b3a{\npadding-bottom:10px;\n}\nbody .av-special-heading.av-jqv0uih5-b35a1df4d2956a35cdbe606c66f21b3a .av-special-heading-tag .heading-char{\nfont-size:25px;\n}\n.av-special-heading.av-jqv0uih5-b35a1df4d2956a35cdbe606c66f21b3a .av-subheading{\nfont-size:15px;\n}\n<\/style>\n<div  class='av-special-heading av-jqv0uih5-b35a1df4d2956a35cdbe606c66f21b3a av-special-heading-h3  avia-builder-el-6  el_after_av_textblock  el_before_av_textblock '><h3 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >2018<\/h3><div class=\"special-heading-border\"><div class=\"special-heading-inner-border\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<section  class='av_textblock_section av-jqv1fm0x-e2c0b71e572c10b8321261b0f2a363ed '   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>To make it easier for us to clearly see what we are spending our money on, I track three different things:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33409 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/ourtourmedia.s3.eu-central-003.backblazeb2.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/PandL.jpg\" alt=\"Budget Tracking Categories\" width=\"735\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ourtourmedia.s3.eu-central-003.backblazeb2.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/PandL.jpg 735w, https:\/\/ourtourmedia.s3.eu-central-003.backblazeb2.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/PandL-300x112.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ourtourmedia.s3.eu-central-003.backblazeb2.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/PandL-705x264.jpg 705w, https:\/\/ourtourmedia.s3.eu-central-003.backblazeb2.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/PandL-450x168.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 735px) 100vw, 735px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our fixed costs are things we need to spend in order to keep our income coming in, so I split these out from our day to day living and travelling expenses. We set ourselves an annual budget of \u00a315,000 for living expenses and while we don&#8217;t stick to it rigidly (we&#8217;ll go out for a meal if we want to, or buy tickets to a festival even if they are more than a week&#8217;s budget!) we do use it as a sense check on a week by week basis. In 2018 we had 21 weeks where we were &#8216;over budget&#8217;, but then we had weeks where we hardly spent anything, so it all balanced out in the end.<\/p>\n<h4>How did we do against our \u00a315k per year living expenses budget?<\/h4>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the funny thing. When we had to have Charlie (our canine family member) put down in June of 2018, we sat down and talked a lot about our lives. Charlie was a fantastic travel companion, but he did stop us from doing some things and going to some places as we couldn&#8217;t leave him alone for long. We knew Charlie put some restrictions on our lives, we didn&#8217;t mind as he was worth it, but we didn&#8217;t know how our \u00a315k budget would stand up now that he has gone.<\/p>\n<p>We decided to up our annual budget to \u00a320k and as we were already halfway through the year, we&#8217;d expect to end up spending \u00a317,500 in 2018.\u00a0We failed. Even though we bought everything we wanted and went to the places we wanted to, we still only spent \u00a316,060.63 on our living expenses &#8211; we ended up \u00a31439 under budget, that&#8217;s over 8%! We really must try harder in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>However, the living expenses do not include our bills at home. As we rent out rooms in our home back in the UK, we split the bills with our tenants. This means that the money we pay for our share of the bills is reported in our Fixed Costs. If we were to add our share of the bills \u00a31413.52, we&#8217;re almost bang on budget for the year (however next year we plan to set our budget as \u00a320k plus the household bills so we&#8217;ll still have to get spending!).<\/p>\n<h4>What did we spend our money on?<\/h4>\n<p>Surprisingly it&#8217;s almost identical to when we are spending more time travelling. And at the moment, we think it is. We&#8217;re certainly enjoying the time freedom we have in our lives. Not having to go to work every day means we can spend our time doing whatever we want.<\/p>\n<p>Sure out income is a great deal less than it was in our &#8216;previous lives&#8217;, but we are still spending less than we earn. If you take our living expenses and fixed costs away from our income, we&#8217;re saving and investing 24% of our total income.
