While Ju and I have been back in the UK, \u00a0we’ve had conversations about our unusual lifestyle, in particular about living frugally. While it is true we’re careful in how we spend money, just being frugal alone would never give us the lifestyle we have, where from age 43 neither of us, \u00a0realistically, have<\/em> to work again. To do what we do, \u00a0we had to deliberately design our lives, \u00a0much like an architect would design a house.<\/p>\n

Life architecture: that’s what this post is about, deliberately designing your life.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

It would be untrue to make out we were as organised as an architect throughout this process. Thinking about it, \u00a0it’s only after the fact we realised we’d done this design work. If we had known what we were doing some years back, \u00a0that we could create our lives<\/em> rather than letting them just play out<\/em>, we’d have stepped out of the rat race some time earlier. \u00a0That’s why I’m writing this down, \u00a0in the hope that it might help someone else atttain their chosen lifestyle more quickly.<\/p>\n

During the iterative lifestyle design approach we ended up following (which we are still following), \u00a0we came up with these requirements for our lives:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. We wanted to live in bricks and mortar while in the UK.<\/li>\n
  2. We wanted to be able to travel as and when we pleased, for a long as we wanted to.<\/li>\n
  3. We wanted to avoid being forced to spend long periods of time in negative and cynical environments.<\/li>\n
  4. We wanted financial security through a range of passive income streams.<\/li>\n
  5. If and when we chose to do either paid or volunteer work, \u00a0we wanted it to feel ethical and fulfilling to us.<\/li>\n
  6. We wanted to live close to our families while in the UK.<\/li>\n
  7. We wanted to live in a town centre, \u00a0within walking distance to shops, \u00a0restaurants, pubs, library, gym, bus into the city and so on.<\/li>\n
  8. We no longer wanted lives in which anxiety and depression played any part.<\/li>\n
  9. We wanted all of this by age 50. Then by age 45. And finally by age 43.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Thinking back, this was a lot to ask! \u00a0Somehow we didn’t let that deter us, \u00a0and we worked out what we broadly needed to do in life in order to meet these requirements. This is broadly how we ‘designed’ our lives to meet the above requirements:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • We realised our financial education was lacking<\/em>, \u00a0so taught ourselves the basics of investing through various books and blogs. We also leaned heavily on positive thinking resources, \u00a0just Google Tony Robbins and you’ll get the idea. Everybody say Aye!<\/li>\n
    • We realised limiting our spending<\/em> would enable us to meet our goals far more quickly. \u00a0After travelling for months in North Africa and Eastern Europe, our previous (already reduced) spending patterns looked wildly extravagant anyway, so this area turned out to be quite easy to achieve.<\/li>\n
    • We noted that small space living<\/em> had numerous positive effects for us. We had less space to store stuff, \u00a0so we bought less. The less space we used, the more rooms we could let out to others. And general costs fell too: heating, repairs and so on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Those three areas formed the cornerstones of our ‘initial life design’. \u00a0Frugal living, you’ll notice, is only one of the stones. Without the small space living and investment knowledge, \u00a0we’d still be commuting to the cubicles for another decade at least. I even find it difficult to think of our lives as being particularly frugal, \u00a0if I’m honest, we’re efficient in our spending<\/em>, \u00a0that’s all. We think purchases through, we consider the downsides of buying (the initial cost is just the start<\/em>), we use our own skills where we want to rather than paying others, and we’ve designed ourselves the time to get the things we need for less. We travel endlessly, we eat out, we have a broad array of gadgets, we are well fed, \u00a0warm and clothed. And no, \u00a0we no longer feel anxiety or depression.<\/p>\n

      The design process goes on. After writing this we’re sitting down for another goal setting session with one another, to assess our next set of requirements, to build on what we already have.<\/p>\n

      Can I recommend designing life? \u00a0Of course I can, although I fully accept it isn’t easy<\/em>. Once you get started with it though, the idea of letting life drift by, or letting others design your life for you, suddenly feels quite outrageous. Your life, your time, \u00a0which can never be bought back<\/em>, is passing. \u00a0You can’t have a second crack at it.<\/p>\n

      Own your life, \u00a0design it to be whatever you want it to be.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
