{"id":243,"date":"2011-09-25T14:31:29","date_gmt":"2011-09-25T13:31:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ourtour.co.uk\/home\/?page_id=243"},"modified":"2021-08-23T12:15:52","modified_gmt":"2021-08-23T11:15:52","slug":"our-home-dave-the-hymer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ourtour.co.uk\/home\/our-home-dave-the-hymer\/","title":{"rendered":"Our home &#8211; Dave the Hymer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A little bit of information about our home for the year:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Name<\/strong>: Dave the Hymer motorhome (named after the last owner&#8217;s cat&#8217;s nickname)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-QaLODR0Cmw\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Type<\/strong>: Hymer B544 1993 on a Fiat chassis<\/p>\n<p><strong>Engine<\/strong>: 2.5L turbo diesel, probable 25 to 30MPG, around 100,000 miles before the trip starts, FSH (including lots of German and English bill receipts)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Steering<\/strong>: Left hand drive, power steering, no cruise control<\/p>\n<p><strong>Size<\/strong>: With the bike rack around 6m long and 2.5m wide (feels like 10m and 4m respectively)<\/p>\n<p><strong>MAM<\/strong>: 3100Kg (which we were just below when we went to the weighbridge before we left)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Heating<\/strong>: Blown air Truma heating system running from LPG. LPG-powered gas BBQ<\/p>\n<p><strong>Electricity<\/strong>: 110Ah leisure battery with 100W solar panel and 300W inverter, 230V hook-up<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gas System<\/strong>: Fixed LPG tank<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sleeping<\/strong>: Drop down over cab double bed with memory foam mattress (other beds can be made up but we&#8217;re not likely to use them)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Washing<\/strong>: Cassette loo, wet room with shower, hatch to allow outside shower, sink with hot and cold water for pot washing<\/p>\n<p><strong>Seating<\/strong>: One long bench (which Charlie seems to have decided is his preferred observation point) and two short benches with a &#8216;semi fixed&#8217; table, plus a couple of camping chairs and camping table for when we&#8217;re on sites<\/p>\n<p><strong>Security<\/strong>: Secondary locks on all doors, dog-based motion detection<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_257\" style=\"width: 209px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ourtourmedia.s3.eu-central-003.backblazeb2.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/DSC_0140.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-257\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-257\" title=\"Inside 2\" src=\"https:\/\/ourtourmedia.s3.eu-central-003.backblazeb2.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/DSC_0140-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"Inside Dave 2\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ourtourmedia.s3.eu-central-003.backblazeb2.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/DSC_0140-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/ourtourmedia.s3.eu-central-003.backblazeb2.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/DSC_0140-681x1024.jpg 681w, https:\/\/ourtourmedia.s3.eu-central-003.backblazeb2.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/DSC_0140.jpg 1702w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-257\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Magic pull down bed (don&#8217;t worry there are curtains all around it!)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Entertainment<\/strong>: Radio\/CD player in cab, surround sound speakers, games, books, eBooks, dog walking\/playing and oh yes, hopefully entertainment in the local area, which we can explore with our bikes and pooch-chariot<\/p>\n<p>Why we bought this van:<\/p>\n<p><strong>#1 reason<\/strong>: the van&#8217;s bed is just genius. It drops down from the roof on hydraulic struts, and gives you a good deal of head room when all the way down. Takes about 1 minute to drop down and the same to put it back up. Ideally we think we&#8217;d have a fixed bed at the back of the van for long-term comfort and avoiding the sanity-sapping process of making up a bed each night. However, a fixed bed means a large van, and (a) we couldn&#8217;t afford one and (b) we wanted to keep the van size down to make it easier to drive and park. There are plenty of vans with over cab beds, but Ju found them claustrophobic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#2 reason<\/strong>: Hymer&#8217;s are not the prettiest of motorhomes (my humble opinion). However, they do have a reputation for excellent German build quality, especially the older ones. At \u00a310,500 the van wasn&#8217;t cheap, but for the type of van we have it is a good price. It means we have a high mileage machine with around 100,000 miles, but we&#8217;ve mitigated the risk of breakdowns by buying a van with a FSH, and by having a contingency fund and ADAC pan-European breakdown cover.<\/p>\n<p>And finally a few thoughts on what we&#8217;re expecting to learn about the van as we travel:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How many miles it actually does to the gallon, and how much driving style can influence it<\/li>\n<li>How reliable it is<\/li>\n<li>What it&#8217;s like to drive, especially on the smaller, poor quality roads<\/li>\n<li>What it&#8217;s like to shower in<\/li>\n<li>How the solar panel and leisure battery combo work in practice<\/li>\n<li>How hard it is to find LPG, and where do our adapters work<\/li>\n<li>Whether we really need to buy and carry snow chains (at the moment we&#8217;re thinking we&#8217;ll avoid the cold countries in winter, but I&#8217;m thinking we might need some for mountains, even in warmer months)\n<div id=\"attachment_261\" style=\"width: 209px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ourtourmedia.s3.eu-central-003.backblazeb2.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/DSC_0147.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-261\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-261\" title=\"Bathroom\" src=\"https:\/\/ourtourmedia.s3.eu-central-003.backblazeb2.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/DSC_0147-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"Bathroom\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ourtourmedia.s3.eu-central-003.backblazeb2.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/DSC_0147-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/ourtourmedia.s3.eu-central-003.backblazeb2.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/DSC_0147-681x1024.jpg 681w, https:\/\/ourtourmedia.s3.eu-central-003.backblazeb2.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/DSC_0147.jpg 1702w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-261\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Toilet \/ Shower<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Update<\/strong>: Dave stayed with us for nearly three years, two of which were on the road touring Europe and North Africa.
