Motorhome Review – Amazon Kindle

Description of Item We both have a Kindle, a black and white ebook reader, which we use in the motorhome and when at home.Kindle eReader
How We Use It When Ju left work in 2011 she was given a Kindle as a leaving present. She still used up until 2020 when she finally bought, a newer version with back light function. We now both have back-lit Kindles and use them almost exclusively for reading fiction books (as you can see from the photo, we prefer our travel/reference books to be in print).
What Do We Love?
  • Space in the motorhome is always at a premium. Books take up huge amounts of room and weigh quite a lot. The Kindle takes up next to no room and weights very little
  • Getting hold of English paper books outside the UK is hard work. Downloading an English book to the Kindle is far easier, so you can buy the latest best seller and have it on your device to read in seconds.
  • Our new (to us, they have been around for years) back-lit versions (Kindle Paperwhite) enable us to read in low lighting conditions and because the screen is anti-glare it can also be read in bright sunlight, unlike iPads etc.
  • Kindle Unlimited is a service that allows you to read as much as you want, choosing from over 1 million titles and thousands of audiobooks. It costs £7.99 a month (less than the price of most books) and if you use the link above you can get a free 0 day trial.
And What’s Not so Great?
  • We prefer to flick through travel and guidebooks, so we’re not huge fans of the Kindle for those.
  • You have to charge it up of course, although the battery lasts a long time. We charge it on a 300W inverter attached to our leisure battery
Our Summary We’ve lots of time for reading while away in the motorhome, and the Kindle provides a way to do it with the minimum space and weight requirements. The battery lasts an age. We’ve dropped a star because our model is black and white only – no inspirational photos on it (newer Kindle models are colour but we don’t have experience of them – yet!). We would say that for any avid readers, a Kindle is a fantastic piece of motorhome kit.
Where Can I Get It? There are loads of different types of Kindle to suit every budget. Click on this link to Amazon where you’ll see the whole range.
