Review – Buffalo Drivestation 1TB Hard Drive

Description of Item This is an external (USB2) hard drive; it has a capacity of 1TB (approximately 1000GB).
How We Use It We’re taking thousands of photographs and video clips as we travel. We also have films which we ripped from DVDs before we left the UK. This drive enables us to store them all separately to the hard drive on our laptop, so we have a back-up in the event the laptop hard drive fails.
What Do We Love?
  • It has a huge capacity. We don’t have a HD video recorder, so I doubt we’d fill it in years of travel
  • It’s small enough to carry with us when we’re away from the van
And What’s Not so Great?
  • It needs an external power supply to work. We can easily manage this – we just run the laptop on battery and the drive on our 300W inverter when copying files back and forth. It’s more the hassle of retrieving the power supply whenever we want to use it which is the downside
  • It’s USB2, which can feel pretty slow when copying large numbers of files
  • It doesn’t include any security software, so if you store any sensitive files on it you need to secure them yourself
Our Summary It does what it says on the tin: 1TB is a huge amount of storage and it was a good price. In 6 months of bouncing around Europe it’s not failed and we continue to use it as a back-up and to hold our films stash. Drops a star due to the fact it needs the additional power supply, which is a hassle.
