A quiet day off in San Marino

Zagan the motorhome has spent the day in the mist, in a free car park at San Marino (N43.94050, E12.44015). Like when we stopped by here yesterday it is deserted apart from us, although there was an Italian motorhome here when we arrived this morning, cleverly opting for a flatter place to spend the night than the car park closer to town.

Somewhere flat in San Marino!!

As Jay is feeling a little under the weather we only moved a short distance from where we parked yesterday. We had to drive around most of San Marino to get here though, as the roads loop around the rock it sits on. The sun has gone, the mist has rolled in, and it feels like another world. Good job we caught the views yesterday as today it’s been a white-out. With nothing to distract us out of the window we’ve been chilling out, reading, writing and planning.

The ferry company we emailed, SNAV, have written back to say they don’t offer ‘camping on board’, but do have pet-friendly cabins on some routes. While it’s better than having to put Charlie in kennels (which will never happen) it is almost double the cost at €245. So, we’ve contacted the other two operators to see if they can help, or are cheaper, and have our fingers crossed. If none of them offer camping on board, then we’ll take the cabin option as it’s a 791 kilometre drive, some of which we’d do twice as we head back up Croatia, so it makes sense to ferry it.

I do love Italy, and San Marino, and I could easily stay here (maybe not in this misty car park though), but I think that I need a change of scenery. The marvellous baroque buildings and beautiful cities can only hold me so long, the gelato holds me a bit longer, but eventually I have to say arrivederci, which isn’t goodbye, simply until we meet again.

We’ll keep you updated on the ferry, but for now it’s time to return to my book – I’m reading Lady Chatterley’s Lover as the author, D H Lawrence, was born close to where we live and I’ve never read any of his books, so while I have the time I figured I would.

The article doesn’t say anything about where she was or the paintings are. Sadly we can’t see the series, but will keep an eye out in case we stumble across her.

If you drive around it’s gonna cost around 100 euros in fuel to get to Zadar so the ferry at around 150 euros would be great if you could get it at that price with Charlie…or even pay more to save days of driving and as you say you would also be up and down the same road. I doubt camping on board a ferry is allowed as on a Coach we can’t (not allowed) back on it for anything when sailing but I could be wrong about motorhomes?

Hi there, we’re off on our long planned 7 month trip and have by chance ended up on one of the sostas today you stopped at in Oct 2012, Giusvalla. Up in the hills above Genoa. We’ve started updating our blog, a page a week, two pages up so far. We keep following your blog, it’s good to have footsteps to tread in sometimes, Kev & Liz from Nottingham :)

Awesome! Fun times to be had in Italy, if you’ve not been before, it’s packed with stuff to see. We’re feeling like we’ve seen a fair bit of it though, so the ferry to Croatia’s been booked (which we’ve also seen, but we also know it’s a doddle to travel through as no choice but to use campsites)! Bring on the Adriatic and, with a good wind, some good weather. Have fun folks, keep blogging, cheers, Jay

Thanks will do. Ferry deck camping to Greece from Bari in mid April is our rough plan. Enjoy Croatia, the beers great. Kev and Liz

Ha ha! Don’t they only say that in Eastwood then? My Dad has a fab accent, pronouncing water ‘whatter’, and birds ‘bods’, which drives my Mum nuts! Cheers, Jay
